Yes Dale and Ian are correct.  This is exactly what he was doing: a stereo
pair routed to the input of an 8 bus analogue mixer. Each of the 8 output
faders going to a seperate speaker. The stereo inputs were panned left and
right and assigned to all output faders, which usually  means left channel
goes to 1,3,5 & 7, and right channel goes to 2, 4, 6, & 8.  He expertly
manipulated the sound so that it bounced and swirled around the room.
Since these are output faders there are no seperate EQ controls so its just
volume levels only.  Really simple and old school but very effective.  You
have to remember that his type of music, musique concrete, lends itself
well to this technique.  It would not work at all with something like dub
or techno.
