the comcept of the model minority was first theorized in the 1940's/1050's
by sociologists who wanted a explanation of whay japanese americans seemed
to assilimilate so well into american society. since then, it has been used
by many conservative politicians as a means for explaining why asians seem
to have so much "success," while other people of color, namely blacks and
latinos, seem to fail. thus, these politicians use asian americans and
their model minority status as a justification to withold resources from
underrepresented groups. in actuality, the success of asian americans has
much more to do with the fact that most are immigrants and arrive here with
things like higher edication, and trainiing. this has been documented
extensively in many texts in asian american studies, most notably ronald
takaki's seminal work, strangers from a different shore, a a history of
asians in america.
