RE: [microsound] [OT] hiphop article

Its easy to knock mainstream hip-hop music as amoral and antisocial: similar
criticisms can be leveled at all kinds of mainstream music, and popular
culture in general. More problematic, though: misogyny and homophobia are
present, and remain largely uncriticised, in the work of even the most
respected and "progressive" hip-hop musicians. Also, the lack of /serious/
social criticism in hip-hop music, despite a mythology that claims
otherwise. Even the most outspoken hip-hop musicians (Dead Prez, for
example) are often just repeating tried and true topics, recycled from Krs
and Public Enemy. Aside from a word here and there, has hip-hop produced
many significant responses to, for example, the conflict in Iraq?
