Previous to 1958 (not 100% sure on that date, but it was definitely the late 
fifties), copyrights lasted fifty years, but could be extended by, obviously, 
reapplying for copyright of the material.

In 195whatever, the law was changed so that copyright attaches to something in 
prepetuity. One of the true nadirs of American cultural history, that day.

I keep waiting for the estate of Homer to sure the estate of Virgil.
