RE: [microsound] Hotline problem (Klanghausen deadline: September 1 2003)

Hi. I'm having trouble connecting to the hotline server - using win2k with
hotline 1.9.1, it logs in and all, then complains about a component missing
and shuts the program down. Tried uninstalling, downloading install and
installing again, no joy.

While I try and sort this out, could someone send me the impulse file
(offlist) ?

Cheers

Klanghausen - a microsound project
==========================

I was talking with some other microsounders during the 'Microsound' chapter
2 book club meeting last Sunday. While leafing through the book to answer a
question my eye fell on the diagram for Stockhausen's piece "Kontakte." In
the diagram an impulse generator is fed to filter-banks, waveshaping
transfer functions (pre-amps), reverbs and tape feedback but given the
arsenal of plug-ins available on the web an impulse soundfile can be fed
through a wide range of processors. The impulse schema struck me as very
elegant and could form the basis of a microsound project.

so, in the spirit of providing the list with a summer project as well as
paying homage to Herr Stockhausen (who we all owe a great deal to) I offer
this invitation:
- use the Impulse.aiff soundfile in the 'Klanghausen' project folder
(download from the microsound server) or make your own impulse sound file in
Peak, Cool Edit, PD or Max/MSP. First build a library of sounds created by
sending your impulse through various types of plugins. Then create a new
piece using this library.

[feel free to mangle the samples you create with the impulse soundfile]

some general guidelines:

- only one piece per member

- the piece should be no longer than 5 minutes

- upload finished work to the microsound hotline server for others to hear
and remember to announce to the list when you have uploaded the piece

[microsound hotline server: microsound.synthesizer.org
also, see http://www.bigredh.com for downloading a PC/MacOS hotline client]

***IMPORTANT *** - if you don't already have a password to the microsound
server you must FIRST get a password from me to upload and download files
from the server and you have to be a listmember in order to get this pswd

again, this invite is to microsound list members ONLY

*get the impulse.aiff file here-> path: "Uploads/Klanghausen/Impulse.aiff"

*put your piece here -> path: "Uploads/Klanghausen/myFolder"
- remember to name your folder something unique and not 'myFolder'
- oh yeah, please make your folder a 'drop box' by naming it like this:
'myFolderName drop box'
and NOT 'myFolderName dropbox' or myFolderName drop-box'
spaces are ok when making a 'drop box and ONLY when making a 'drop box'
folder...

the deadline for submissions (submission means posting to the list that you
have uploaded a piece into the Klanghausen folder) is September 1st 2003

some technical guidelines:
- post only 128kbps/44.1kHz/stereo .mp3 files
- first make a folder within the "Uploads/Klanghausen" folder and upload
your finished work there
- post to the list that you have uploaded your piece (include the name of
the piece)

please do the following when putting files on the server:
- use filetype suffixes in your filenames...such as "mynewpiece.mp3"
- do not use spaces or non-alphanumerics chars in filenames
- the use of underscores_in_filenames_are_ok
- example of bad filename: "#my, #new, #piece!.mp3"
- example of good filename: "myNewPiece_mynamehere.mp3"
(sans quotes of course)
this makes things more clear for everyone

ALL styles of microsound are welcome...

PLEASE post all comments, suggestions and ideas *to the list* and NOT to me
directly...

extra stuff:
=========
from "Karlheinz Stockhausen's Kontakte and Narrativity" by John Dack:
<http://cec.concordia.ca/econtact/SAN/Dack.htm>

'In a lecture entitled The Four Criteria of Electronic Music, Stockhausen
used the electronic sounds of Kontakte to illustrate the following concepts:

1 Composition in the musical time continuum.

2 The decomposition of sound.

3 Composition of several layers in space.

4 The equality of musical sound and noise."
