Although, more detail would be useful with the peer-to-peer comments/standard 
hype:

"Ensuring the integrity of songs would be easy: a standardized encoding format 
and checksums."

It says 'would be', but some peer-to-peer networks have MD5 hashes which allow 
the client software to determine the integrity of the file.  In fact, artists 
can use bittorrent to achieve this (and do).
