standard naming convention

this will probably look naive.

from mit press' _microsound_ copy:

"Below the level of the musical note lies the realm of microsound, of sound
particles lasting less than one-tenth of a second."

i always thought curtis roads preferred - practically codified (xenakis, et
al notwithstanding) - the older (?) "granular [synthesis|composition]"
designation and i don't recall reading the m-word in _the computer music
tutorial_. do the terms have different meanings? is this a purposeful
evolution to a more accurate or inclusive (or exclusive, or... or...) Naming? is it just a more
[conversation|marketing]-friendly term? have i been using a deprecated
standard?
