This type of thing, where a "genre" seems to spill out beyond a small coterie of practitioners into a wider influence, seems to be a funtion of history. I don't know if anyone can do anything about it, I'm not sure it's even possible.

Think of how quickly Pop Art became chic only a few years after it was an arcane reaction against Abstract Expressionism.

I have to chuckle when I hear the theme music to "E News Daily" on the Entertainment network. It's straight ahead drum 'n' bass. If it was 1996 instead of 2003, I'd say it was pretty cutting edge, but now...? Maybe it has something to do with the revolving door of style combined with commerce.
