Mertens, W. (1983). _American minimal music : La Monte Young, Terry
Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass_. Wim Mertens ; translated by J.
Hautekiet ; preface by Michael Nyman. London : Kahn & Averill ; New York
: Broude.
Talks about the composers to whom the term "minimalist" was first
applied. Might be useful historical context for those who think
"minimalism" in music is a new thing. It's worth noting that the music
history that positions these four composers as the quintessential
minimalists leaves out a lot of other people, like Tony Conrad and
Charlemagne Palestine. It's also worth noting that the definition of
"minimalism" in art and music is relatively unquestioned. I think it's
good to be skeptical of any history of the "origins" of minimalism. Blah
blah blah.

can anyone recommend good online articles/essays on minimalist art - its
history, philosophy, etc ?
