PAULINE OLIVEROS / REYNOLS "THE MINECXIO CONNECTION: LIVE! AT THE ROSENDALE

?One of the most unexpected yet fruitful partnerships of recent years: in 
the mid-1990s, Pauline Oliveros, electronic music pioneer and sage of the 
environmental-drone, began working with Reynols, the prolific and resolutely 
undefinable Argentinian group. Their first joint effort sent Oliveros' music 
through the rigours of Reynols' heavily processed studio treatments; THE 
MINEXCIO CONNECTION: LIVE! AT THE ROSENDALE CAFE finds them collaborating 
on-stage in real time. Recorded in August 2000 during Reynols' first trek 
through North America, they offered up a version of "Six For New Time" 
(originally composed by Oliveros for Sonic Youth's GOODBYE 20th CENTURY LP), 
along with idiosyncratic throat-singing and hypnotic dream/dronescapes. The 
venue may have been a small cafe in rustic upstate New York, but the sonic 
results sound like emanations from the deepest of Deep Listening caves under 
the earth.?

?A singularly brilliant work for baritone, tenor, contralto & soprano 
whistling kettles from this unpredictable Argentinian collective. Reynols 
seems to be more active than ever, responsible for a bunch of highly 
conceptual projects such as the ?10.000-chicken Symphony?, ?BlanTapes?, 
?Fire Music?, ?Reynols Plays the Eiffel Tower?, etc. this sound-art piece 
redefines a traditional format in classical music Їthe quartetЇ 
in order to expand its boundaries and possibilities. Through the three 
movements of this composition (Andante Mogal, Moderato uno Surido Fermo and 
Allegro Repuliom Lanidelo), the sound of the four whistling kettles create 
deep textures, ranging from minimal static drones to complex pitch 
counterpoints. If the String Quartet has, for centuries, been a must for 
composers, what can we expect from the coming XXI century quartets? Maybe

DR-42 DRONE RECORDS

2nd edition of this previously sold-out ?classic?. Released now in white 
vinyl with a totally different
full-colour artwork. ?Though the way it's satisfied seems humorous, even 
weird; this Argentinian band's thirst for innovation arrives at 
awe-inspiring results. "The 10.000 Chickens Symphony" is a title hinted at a 
true process : muzak based on a field-recording of a very big scum of 
chickens - this sentence may leave blanks in mind along with expectations 
ranging from junk noise to electroacoustic music. Yet just after the play 
button is pushed, the question marks evolve to signs of awe and respect as 
Reynols do not exhibit an orgy of naked, untreated sounds; instead they 
strike their raw material with a decomposing fist and tear apart the 
moderate air of field recordings. The first track is made of bleak, swarming 
pulses that vibrate in the very depths of an audio pit and reach us through 
a moist curtain of silence. Soundstreams never thicken, nor they touch the 
surface layer once - even they are squeezed twice under ultra-low frequency 
bass-drones which at times strain the speaker capacity. The depth we have to 
measure underlines the key role of silence - like the darkness in 
Rembrandt's paintings, silence here refers to a pored, even textured void; 
something does not plainly equal to the absence of sound. We're in a closer 
position in the second track. This time the modificated sounds feign an 
English green natural ambience : the buzzing of insects, watery noise and 
the chimes of birds are perceivable to imaginative minds. Yet when the 
listener slowly gets used to the steadiness of ambience, a caustic stream of 
noise suddenly lashes out and pauses all movement to end of the track.The 
overall experience can be compared to listening to a swarm of bats from a 
cave's mouth - unconforting as well as enchanting.? Subsekt Magazine

?Edition of 49! Get 'em while you can. A document of one night when "three" 
guys from Argentina were almost swept up in an Indiana tornado. Throat 
singing, amplified archery bows and drumming from another plane. Telepathic 
interactions between each of the musicians as the 40-minute piece moves from 
a punching drum freakout into a lullaby for the dark street beneath. A night 
to remember. Many manufacturing problems have kept this release wrapped up

Starfield Simulation #11
by Argentinean group Reynols. This performance is based on their Trente 
Osieaux record,
Blank Tapes (based on the treated sound/hiss of empty casettes), here 
remixed and blended
into an intense drone with concrete sounds from cassettes and contact 
microphones. Their
performance was both physical and visual in a way whitch one can only 
imagine when listening

Neither pure psyche rock nor a conceptual capture, this recording may
bridge some illusive gap in the ever-expanding black hole that is
Reynols' oeuvre...starting out with a wailing Skullflower-like
wall-of-sleep it winds up in hushed, keening tones some 40 minutes
later.......and I swear there's a bit of wicked mouth-harp playing in
there somewhere, too! Yay. It was a great evening, Miguel's astral
presence beamed keen as mustard. (Humbug site)
"....I must admit I quite enjoyed this disc. Overall it has a drone
induced atmosphere of guitars being played with ebows and sparse
percussion. There are some loops here and there and the feelings are
bit dark and sinister here. There is no such thing as just banging
and hitting, as heard on some of their other releases and overall
there is a strong sense of concentrated playing. So, this Reynols
release ends up on my small pile of good Reynols releases."

INTO THE LUNAR NIGHT (DENMARK)

?Reynols's first dannish gig ever was a powerful sound experience in a real 
CHURCH in Copenhagen. The Chapel had a natural reverb of 5.5 seconds and was 
the right ambience for a concert like this. The CD contains two different 
recordings of the same gig both sounding very different. If anyone doubts 
noise-drone-rock can meet the ancient European mysticism, here is a proof. 
So now you have something to believe in?"
