Re: [microsound] The Wapping Project

Dear list,

(might be of interest by London's micromusicsounders:-)

[otherwise-delete!]
The spnm (society of promoting new music) celebrates this year
its 60th birthday with various concerts and events.

One of those is the project of sound/visual installations at
THE WAPPING HYDRAULIC POWER STATION which
now is called THE WAPPING PROJECT.

>From 27th October -8th November at this place there will be sound/visual
installations curated by Michael Rosas-Cobian
I participate in this spnm's project with the [DVD] sound/video installatio=
n
'Fluid Trans-Formations' among other musicians'/artists' works. Mine, will
be in site on 2th and 4th of November.
All pieces are site-specific. They have been made by taking
into consideration the building's past and present condition.

To put you in context:

The Wapping Power Station was built in1890 and it was
one five London Stations of this kind. It harnessed
Thames Water to provide power not only to the surrounding
docks but throughout the Central London Area.
When it finally closed in 1977 it was the last of this kind in the world.
Unlike the Tate Modern, which cleared out all it's cyclopean turbines
and boilers, the Wapping project has retained as much as is
sensible -given that you want some clear spaces to work in.
its equivalent of Tate Modern's huge turbine hall is the restaurant
section, where dinners are raised on a shallow podium surrounded
by heavy bits of electrical machinery. Furthermore there is the boiler
house and a smaller space in which many events take place.
The transformation of this building in its present condition
has been made by the theatre director Jules Wright in 2000.
