I once used the seat of a cheap pressed steel chair leaning against a 
cupboard door situated about 5 feet behind an SM58 mic into which my some was 
alternately muttering then screaming vocals for post -rock drone type "song" that we 
were recording in my project studio. we found the effect far more subtle than 
vst plug ins running on Cubase.  Chris b
