ciao.
tonight on sing sweet software, a special presentation
of a piece composed by chicago sound artist vadim
sprikut. some of you may know vadim from his 'ac'
series every odd sunday here in the windy city.
'cold.' is a 45-minute piece created with contact
microphone, melting ice and computer processing.
here are some notes from the composer:
-----
This work is based entirely around an evironmental
recording of ice melting. Ice cubes were placed into a
glass, which itself was placed into a small metal pot.
Hot water was poured into the pot, around the glass,
in order to accelerate the melting process slightly. A
mic was attached to the glass and the melting was
recorded for about 45 minutes. The source material was
then manipulated into the resultant recording. No
other sounds were added.
The recording itself represents many sound events that
we are aware of an a superficial level. Most of these
events, whether natural or man made, contribute to a
gestalt type of process that helps us to apprehend an
evironment as a whole. The individual elements that
make up this whole are rarely given as much attention
as the entire sound field.
My intent was to take one of these events and examine
it out of the context of the whole. Rather, the
singular event itself becomes the environment and we
are forced to examine its nature: its movement, the
physical structure of the sound, space, depth, etc.
The goal is to have the listener focus solely on the
sound, rather than try to construct meaning and
purpose. The end result, hopefully, will encourage
active listening and total concentration, which, in a
society that surrounds us with dense walls of data and
information, is becoming increasingly difficult to do.
