if you concentrate on the bottom figure (the sonogram) you'll see a martrix
with frequency on the y axis, time on the x axis and energy on the z axis
(the z axis is implicit)...the darkness of the markings indicate acoustical
energy while its length indicates its energy over time (envelope)...

if you get a chance please play around with the spectral view in a sound
editing app such as Cool Edit Pro...record in a bit of spoken dialog and
take a look at the spectral content  as you play it back and you will start
to get a feel for how the visual and acoustic properties correlate
