[microsound] Subject: card question....

hey hazy
made me smile hearing yr comments about upgrading
i spend a small fortune each year upgrading
(an arm & a leg at least)
& i hear what u are saying
BUT
one factor that contributed to me noticing a quantum improvement
in how my wrk "sounds" was... switching to 24 bit
16 bit is fine as a delivery medium but when u start recording & working at 24 bits
u suddenly notice how much "better" everything sounds
whether its actual acoustic recordings
extreme dsp processing
mixing or whatever

with 24 bit there is so much more resolution (ie data) to mess with
and for algorithms to use in interpolation etc

of course it comes at a cost
requires more storage space, uses more RAM & CPU processing etc etc

Another factor is that software developers are always making
their product to run "best" on the latest gen hardware & OS
but whether that actually impacts on your work depends on the context
you use it in... sometimes its more the restrictions that generate the final product

i realised a few years back that the best analogy of a company like digidesigns
marketing department is that its based on crack dealers
get them addicted & keep upping the habit
with the one difference being that digi have the advantage of being able to introduce
a whole new drug to the market every year or so....
