[microsound] Silence Resounding
So this recent cd by Miki Yui on LINE is one of my favorite's for 2003.
Nice direction to see LINE going in, nice blending of natural/synthetic
sounds. The artist allows her sounds to mix/bleed together with a light
sensitive hand. The tracks at times feel like meditations on silence without
the complete use of total silence. Nice titles as well, smoke, out in the
dark, small fish, d.rain... the titling really places the tracks in such a
way as to allow you a frame of reference without losing a level of
abstractness when hearing in conjunction to the music/sound. So you'll hear
some tones that at times are painful mixed with what seems to be
processed/filtered recordings and other other times what seems to be lightly
treated field recordings. Yui's hand is often pushing sounds towards you in
soft flushes or allowing a sonic field to subtle build. Evokes memories or
at least the idea of memories, like being locked in a gold storage container
or something from child hood like that. Really nice to listen to with a pair
of headphones, overall a very organic wonderful set of recordings and a
excellent follow up to her first release for LINE. Really this cd allows the
listener to build a sound world of thier own much in the way Motion or the
first few Hecker cds seem to operate, nice and understated. Also included
are a few a drawings by the artist that really seem to become
maps/scores/visualiztions of the enclosed audio.
