Re: [microsound] Project Guidelines [attn. Kim also]

Hi Eloy, Kim and list,

I have a question about this particular general guideline:

Post only 128kbps, 44.1kHz stereo, .mp3 files, 6 min or less.

While this seems ok [see below however] for completed participant tracks, I wonder if it could be changed for source material such as Thomas Ashcraft's Jupiter and Sunspot samples. As he himself noted, bad compression really damages the intergrety of the sounds. Bad quality source material does influence the sound of whatever is done with it later, no matter how "far out". Or as my granpappy used to croak: shit in, shit out, boy.

Also, I wonder about this 128 kbps. I know there is an issue of server space to deal with, but 192 kbps is generally acknowledged as the point at which compression artifacts become tolerable.

This is probably enough to chew on for now, so I won't even start my mp3 vs ogg vorbis thread again...

Best,
D.

Hi all,

Hoping to help on the setup of mp3 projects, I have posted
a project guideline page on the .microsound.org site:

http://microsound.org/guidelines.php

This way we can easily refer to them.

Of course, these are just a general guide, based on what we have
used so far. Any and all projects can have its own unique guidelines.

best,

Eloy
