Re: [microsound] a few bastards

umm...hang on...are you saying that artists who appear on mix cds don't need
to be paid ?
were these cds promos, or were they being sold ?

Hmm, imagine (the largely handshake) deal with radio. We give you content, you give us promotion, nobody exchanges money and for the most part everything goes smoothly.

The artists should be paid, but where is the money coming from? If you make a boatload of profit from the mix itself obviously you should share. If you get a DJ hit, more DJs will buy it and more consumers for home listening. Some artists have benefited from this immensely. The song 'Disco Route' by Legowelt was almost single handedly pushed to indie stardom by Sven Vath (10,000 sales I think I read, but that's a lot for an underground success hit). Labels and artists who understand this will be in much better shape than ones who don't (and sue).

I'd suspect that mister blotter paper did not call himself, and probably didn't even know his label was going after an indie mix CD. Moreover, he himself might be unhappy with the threat because of his own work as a DJ (and the risk the scene might rebel), which is why artists need to protect themselves and make sure their labels don't do bone headed crap like this!

Rob

Actually once a label called a station I worked for and asked for all the promos back because we didn't play his music enough and he got his wish, we sent back the beat up copies (college radio is brutal on CDs) and I doubt anyone in the whole state bought his music again. In fact since the local indie music store was kinda in league with the station through mutual employees, I don't think you even could buy that label's work.

I am sympathetic, however. Being a small buisness sucks, most of those strong arm tactics are likely driven by desperation and not spite. My Civil Proceedure teacher told the class - don't be a sleazy lawyer because you're clients won't trust you and you won't get repeat buisness. If you're nice, your clients will love you and bring in their friends.
