I believe both support AGC (automatic gain control), but it's true that
with all of mine, this "feature" must be explicitly disabled before every
recording. A minor pain.
On most older Sonys, you do this by starting in REC-PAUSE mode, then
pressing and holding the REC slider until the word MANUAL flashes on the
display. At this point you can adjust a fixed gain up and down while
watching levels, then begin recording.
On newer ones (eg the MZR700) you navigate to the REC menu, where
manual/automatic is an option.
