MD does not itself roll off!  I have recorded some very low tones (eg
rolling thunder) -- I trust you're correcting for the mics, the earbuds
(if using them), and the fairly anemic headphone amps in Sony MD
recorders...

FWIW there are a host of professional HD recorders about to hit the
market, but most are quite expensive (eg, $1200 and up).

The new 40GB iRiver looks like a great candidate, I don't think it's
shipping yet:

It's worth mentioning btw that if you haven't seen the furor, there's a
new generation of MD coming out in a couple of months that uses 1 GB
disks, allows high speed transfer of your personal recordings, and can
record in uncompressed format (90 minutes to the $7 disk). Cf
