i only use it with osx, so i can't comment on the software question.  as 
for osx the driver that came with it was a bit unstable but they 
recently released an update that solved all the problems i was having. 

it's definitely rugged.  the dimensions are about 9"x6"x2".  i've only 
had mine for about 2 months, but i'm pretty happy with it.
