"Composition or performance are not essential for music creation;
listening is. Understanding the consequences of this makes a radical
change in our role and our possibilities."
	- Francisco López Towards the Blur (2001)

This year the experimental edge of Musica Nova festival is represented
by spanish composer-biologist Francisco López. López, who arrives first
time to Finland, is one of the crucial exponents among the contemporary
musique concrète composers. His vast output - the discography expands
well beyond one hundred titles - consists of a rich spectrum of different
works that are based on recordings of drastically different environments.
When composing, he forms his material freely according to the dictates
of his musical judgment. However, López works according to the conditions
of the material, not trying to organise it to express any pre-existent
musical form or idea. As a biologist, he considers environmental recordings
as ecological wholes that already contain all the necessary tensions
between sounds, the temporal development of which music is largely about.
The composer's duty is only to amplify this latent musical process for
us to hear. His compositions do not express anything but one is allowed
to hear anything in them. In concerts, the audience is encouraged to
cover their eyes, to shut down all other senses for a moment and concentrate
solely on listening. Using compositional means to assist us with the
opening of our ears, López shows that the only way to understand the
inherent value of a sound environment is to listen to it as music.

The concert is produced by Charm of Sound and Sibelius Academy's Center
for Music Technology for Musica Nova festival.
