Re: [microsound] p2p is not killing the music business
there is not much freedom of choice either. what you can find on the
p2p networks is mostly only stuff that interest white middle-class
youth in the US and maybe europe. the ones that get their bandwidth
usage paid by mom and dad. I tried finding even the most interesting
artists from a selection of countries around the world and they are
just not available.
Totally disagree. while there are many artists missing from p2p
many of pop's forgotten genres are amply available if you
want to look at them. Along with works from Stockhausen,
Xenakis, Cage, etc. not to mention Jazz and even some European
improv. P2P's a kinda so-so library of music right now, if your looking
for some thing more specific then you gotta buy it, but if your looking
to browse the basics of 20th century classical, eighties funk, old
skool hip-hop,
indie-rock, improv (gnutella can grab Bailey and Parker for u),
folk, etc there's always a few folks willing to share. I might add
being able
to find live bootlegs of Sonny Sharrock from gnutella is just amazing.
Also, it seems like major record labels
are totally not discussing the real reason for their profit loss,
independent labels. If Matador can move 300k of
a Belle and Sebastian album w/o pay for play then obviously
it's time for major labels to pay attention. Plus a lot of bigger indie
labels have the same distribution as Warner Brothers does.
