I've wanted to build an instrument for a while which is comprised of
autonomous agents. Each one would run on a different computer on the
Internet, and they would form ad-hoc networks and communicate with each
other.

Part of an agent's job would be to record when problems occurred during
communication, such as latency, packet loss and so on. This information
would be used to derive sounds.

My original idea was to use this for a live performance. By exploiting
the chaotic nature of the Internet to produce patterns (sounds), each
performance would be unique. I dubbed the idea 'physical network
synthesis' in my mind, because I realised I could map the autonomous
agents onto many systems not necessarily digital, to produce raw data
for general noise making.

However, after contemplating the idea I never followed it up with any
research, so if anybody knows people who are doing things like this I'd
be interested to hear about it.
