This is like saying there is no video art, as it's basically short film. And
there is no film, as basically it's an extended Magic Lantern, and there is
no Magic Lantern as basically it's a projected photograph, which is
basically a daguerreotype, which is basically a metallic painting, which is
basically a cave painting, which is basically fecal mimicry (according to
Lacan), and perhaps (although not necessarily) finally, basically the
generalized system of signs and desire.
So "distribution" here apparently means something unless you're willing to
collapse everything, at which point there isn't much discussion to be had,
nor, creativity to be found.
Really, there is something to be pondered in all its complicity, intricity
in regards to:
. medium = message
To crack this reduction of video-art to net-art and start understanding the
effects and affects of "distribution," the language of the database,
--> Lev Manovich's _Language of New Media_.
Although one can critique aspects of this text, this is worth considering in
light of the development of experimental electronic music in parallel with
web technologies and net(./-)art.
Lev Manovich talks about the art of databases, Dj Spooky of the art of
remixing the archives.
SOUND. NET. In any case, the reason I wanted to comment here was I am
curious if anyone is applying the Net in/through their sound works. I did a
number of sound pieces for the Net throughout 1998-2001, most of it is
archived here:
http://www.quadrantcrossing.org/quadrant.htm
on the 'net.art' drop-down list, projectS:
Document 9-1-1
SF Digestion
etc ..
SF Digestion -- primarily field recordings built into labyrinthine
structures of scans, text, photographs, shockwave presentation, HTML, etc.,
allowing differential navigational potential, and with Document 9-1-1,
pseudo counterNet possibilities and remixing the sound of politics and
terror (with agent ssiess).
I'd be curious in hearing about any works here, as I am writing about such
pieces. Please post your info/work to the list.
best,
tobias
