ARTIST BIOS
ADAM BUTLER (sonig, whatness, bovinyl) (uk, d) (live)
A true cathedralist of the piano's resonances, Cologne-based
Londoner Adam Butler (aka Vert) joins us for a Sunday
afternoon kneesup on the Foundry baby grand, prior to his
very different set at Sprawl.
Adam makes apres-garde lounge music in the great tradition
of Satie, but at the interface between classical
composition, jazz and electronica. His rebuild of Keith
Jarret's famous 'Koeln Konzert' (Sonig) was picked by The
Wire as one of the best electronica discs of the year 2000.
Last year's album on Ekkehard Ehler's Whatness label,
'Schmoozing With The Apres Garde', continues the
trajectory into microscopic sound. At the same time,
releases as Vert and with German electo supremos Mouse on
Mars explore complex rhythmic structures, dub, funk,
Fennesz-like noise and alluring melodies.
'One of the finest and most innovative composers on the
music scene today ... plaintive, pensive, beautiful.'
Stylus
'A gorgeous mixture of minimal piano pieces, strings,
Fennesz-like processed instruments and an overall cinematic
quality. One of the finest releases on Sonig for quite some
time.'
Boomkat (The Koeln Konzert)
'A very important record!'

PAUL HOOD (turntable hell, twothousandand, imm) (uk) (live)
Paul started working with vintage record players in the
early 1990s and has since continued to use turntables as his
primary instrument. He was part of the touring "Turntable
Hell" group which included Martin Tetrault, Otomo Yoshihide,
Martin Ng and others. Paul was recently featured on volume 3
of Toshimaru Nakamura and Tetuzi Akiyama's "Meeting at
Off-Site" cd (Improvised Music from Japan), and a new album,
'Cplastics', is out now on the Twothousandand label.
Paul has also worked as a key organizer in the London
improvisation scene, starting the Instant Music Meeting club
in 1998 with the intention of bringing improvised and
experimental music to new audiences. Paul also presents the
Japanese improv 'Onkyodo' show on Resonance 104.4FM.
'Beautifully gritty Ambient ... a performance of
considerable poise.'
The Wire (Cplastics)
'Eight tracks of sound manipulations and improvisations
using a prepared turntable and other sound sources ...
delightfullly
contemplative moments that give a true warmth just where
it's needed.'

BBCi EXPERIMENTAL SOUNDSYSTEM (uk) (dj)
Dispatches from the deep crates of the BBC's Experimental
Music crew ... the shadowy figures behind the Jazz and New
Music pages at the BBC Music and Radio 3 websites emerge
blinking into the daylight to play some of the more
interesting obscurities that have landed on their desks in
the last few months.

Chill 2003, MTV, Cargo, 93 Feet East and the Vibe Bar, among
