[microsound] recent microsound projects



the microsound projects have lost any kind of focus. 



previous projects had points of departure that were interesting because they were directly related to the core of microsound. the projects that began with a common source file especially, were very interesting. each artists journey is in some ways clearer because we know where they started from. we can ask, how in the hell did they get there from here. 





lately, however, ideas are being thrown out that are not interesting at all, and have nothing to do with microsound. 





what is the point of the madrid project? i will be the first to agree that the terrorist attack effects all of us in the western world. i do not, however, see any relationship between them and the theory or practice of microsound. the waterman memorial made sense because he was involved in the evolution of microsound and, as far as i know, some of his source material was used in the project. the madrid project seems like a third grade art class assignment, express how this made you feel, but with fingerpaints. besides, i like microsound because it has no subtext.  





the proposed latinoamerica project is even worse. the only point of the thing i can see is pure exoticism; wow, these people live in south america and make music just like we do, isn't that weird? i think it's patronizing too. i'm sure our south american friends have contributed to the other microsound projects, why single them out suddenly because of their location of birth. what can say less about an individual than things they have no say in. why not have a project that features works by people with size 9 feet or people who are 5'10 (not that i would make a track for either though i would be allowed to).  



besides, how are you going to make sure people submitting works are from south america? what's to prevent anyone from uploading one under an assumed name.
