I don't think that promo e-mails discourage discussions. Far from it. Just look at the all of the discussion that they cause on this list group.  ;-)

The only thing that discourages discussion is when people don't have anything they wish to say, otherwise they would post something regardless of whether there were promo e-mails or not. And if people allow themselves to be discouraged from posting discussions due to such a trifle as that, then who's fault is it really?

Well, this is only a good solution for those who complain about promo e-mails, not for labels, artists, etc. The majority of people who subscribe to promo list groups are people who post promo e-mails. And I personally have recieved far more interest from open-ended list groups than from any promo-specific list group. In fact, the ratio is 10 to 1. Rather than segregating people due to their annoyances and pet-peeves, I think it's a much more constructive endeavor to learn how to get along with each other.
