As a free jazz practitioner & laptopian (I play drums & various
percussion) I would like to say YES it's all related ... however...
within the jazz community itself you would find much
disagreement..altho' you will also find much disagreement/debate over
what exactly constitutes 'jazz'....and is free music, and what is it
free of, jazz or just improvised music (and there are many musics that
use improvisation....including classical western art musics(no matter
that it shuns it these days)....for a lot of jazz
musicians/critics/listeners it is only jazz if it swings and has some
relation to the blues...improvisation isn't necessarily what makes it
jazz, there is jazz without improvisation...it can be as much an art of
composition/arrangement as improvisation.....
