What does all this have to do with going from vinyl to CD?
the music industry wants to sell you music files with DRM credentials
to
replace your existing music files. that way, they have more control
[er-
revenue] over what you can listen to in a player that rejects files
that
have invalid or missing DRM credentials.
Yes, in theory, but I think the DRM/fair use mix Apple have will go down
well enough and never lead to that kind of evil scenario.
I suspect services like iTMS that encourage impulse purchases
(like singles sales used to be) and use simple DRM to discourage casual
piracy will become the most popular.
i think the real issue is not the technical one, but the economic one:
how does the current music industry make money off of digital music?
my opinion is that the new networked music economy is much better for
music and musicians than the old. [but with much less money coming in]
As an off-shoot, there's a niche for "non-networked music" :)
