Re: [microsound] O.T.: J.Cage in a quiz show
More half-remembered Cage trivia:
If I remember correctly, the money that Cage won from the Italian gameshow
was the most money he ever made in his lifetime. He spent all of the
proceeds on a VW van and a grand piano (Steinway?).
He also organized a small business selling the exotic mushrooms he gathered
to gourmet markets or restaurants (I don't remember exactly) in NY. Though
this business didn't last long I think he was one of the first to get the
idea that there was a market for exotic mushrooms. Of course today it's
common to find all sorts of strange mushrooms in the supermarket.

Cage
apprently was the first western to go behind the iron curtain during the
cold war because the people of the soviet union really dig
mushrooms and wanted him to basically keynote a major meeting on
micology.
That's interesting because Gordon and Valentina Wasson also noted the
Russian affinity toward mushrooms. They were the first americans to search
out and identify psychedelic mushrooms cultures in Mexico and they initially
became interested in mycology after noticing different cultural attitudes to
mushrooms. Valentina (born in Russia) loved to pick wild mushrooms while
Gordon feared them, considering them all to be dangerous and poisonous.
