also worth checking out:

get records (great alternative selection - nice guys)
concerto (more mainstream, but nice for used cds&dvds)
(both on the utrechtsestraat)

unfortunately many music-related people leave amsterdam for the summer, 
and the more underground music series (especially kraakgeluiden - 
electronic improvised stuff) and the steim concerts (www.steim.nl) are 
not happening in july...
