i'll give another big thumbs up to 1930 as my personal Merzbow 
favorite, and there seem to be some other fine suggestions already put 
forward (agreed that Batztoutai With Material Gadgets is an important 
insight into the phenomenon that is Merzbow...)

his collaborative efforts should not be forgotten here (cannot comment 
on the recent cascone/merzbow yet) and i personally am a fan of the 
Maldoror project with Mike Patton in 99. i love Patton's vocals and i 
think he did a good job of working in and around Akita's noise-space.  
Another more 'fun' one is the limited edition (x/1000) Flying Testicle 
project from 93 with Maso Yamazaki and Zev Asher.  Much more 
"band-like" with drums, violin,screams, guitar,samples.etc.
