hi,

coagula was allready posted,
also check out this: http://www.webcenter.ru/~vsoft/BitmapPlayer.htm
and the other progs by this author...
not as complex as coagula, but has a few features coagula has not.
(also converting wav-bmp in one prog and bmp-wav in the other can produce
interesting results)

as to avi to sound: that sure is possible, should work with pd/gem and
similar, i have no experience in that field though.
