Re: [microsound] High sampling rates/Bit depths

I'm by no means an "audiophile" so this is simply based on my own perception:

If you work with sampling alone, it depends on all your external gear if it's worth working with rates above 48khz. I record sounds with a pair of home made Panasonic omni capsules and they can represent sounds above 41khz, as can the minidisc that I use to record when I'm not at home. The minidisc has a 48khz sampling rate (according to the manual at least) - and this seems to be correct when doing spectrum analysis on the signals. So I record with 24 bits and 48khz.

Now, when you work with synthesized signals the difference between 48khz and say 96khz is huge, at least to my ears. "Simple" synth sounds with many high frequency components sounds much smoother and warmer at very high sample rates - and this difference can even be heard in my crappy headphones made for watching tv... This could be due to poor synthesis in the different software packages that I'm using, but I've noticed this in many programs. There is a freeware synthesizer that I've stumbled across that doesn't seem to have this problem - it sounds very clear, undistorted and smooth. Subject: [microsound] High sampling rates/Bit depths

Hello all,

I've been looking into the pros and cons of working with audio at 24 bit/96 khz/192 khz etc...

There seems to be a lot of mixed opinions by recording engineers and producers who are predominantly in favour but little talk by sound artists or experimental electronic musicians.

Does anyone work with their audio at these kinds of rates/depths? Is there a dramatic difference? Has anyone utilized "super audio" or "dvd audio" as a platform for their work? I'd be extremely interested to hear some opinions on the matter.

Best wishes all,

Michael.
