Re: [microsound] High sampling rates/Bit depths

i work at 44.1khz/24bit. there are 3 reasons that made me switch from 16bit to 24bit...

1. most of our plug ins and DSP tools process internally in our computers at 32 bit, or even greater... so, working at 16 bit.. we're not getting the full resolution out of our plug ins... working at 24 bit is a bit closer.. this means more resolution, more number crunching, in processing our sounds... in theory, this will lead to cleaner reverbs, more accuracy out of our EQs, etc.

2. the added dynamic range and S/N ratio.. which i think has been covered in this thread already... 24bit yields a much lower noise floor and greater dynamic range.

3. why not! it's easy to set 24bit as your default bit depth in your DAW.. and, hard drive space is practically free these days... so.. it really doesn't hurt to try it out and work this way if you like it. the added size to your audio files really isn't an issue.

i picked up Bob Katz's MASTERING AUDIO book the other month and read it through. for the most part, i disliked the book very much. he just made me feel like all of the equipment in my studio was total trash... but i did come out of it with a much better understanding of the benefits of higher bit rates.. so his book may be a good reference...
