Re: [microsound] the great depression of experimental music?
good points about the downfalls of CD-rs. I did not know about the extra layer of plastic on them. And that is a very good point. I also agree that CD-r quality is all over the map, but I think the answer is just to use good CD-rs when releasing stuff. The CD rot thing in CD-rs is now a thing mostly of the past, at least for some CD-r companies, so it's just a matter of finding out what those companies are, and only using them. Problem solved. I have good luck with many CD-rs so far. What you just said about the monetary buffer, I can see the point, but I just don't really agree. I know that there are good arists, and some labels, who could never afford pressed CDs, and I still think those artists and labels should (and do) get their work out to the public in a tangible format. And also, a lot of good musick can get made in a day or two, or even an albums worth every week. I don't want to miss out on that stuff personally (Birchville Cat Motel and the Celebrate Pse Phenomenon label come to mind here in terms of all issues that I've addressed).

There are a few things wrong with CDRs. First and
formost on my mind is that they are HIGHLY susceptible
to disc rot. Another is that the manufacturing
standards for CDrs are ALL over the map and i hate to
see a cdr i buy from an interesting artist be a crappy
maxell because it WILL fall apart. Another thing that
is diffetrent about pressed cds is the extra layer of
plastic protecting the cd from scratches and other
damage (i.e. - when i cd gets scratched, generally
speaking you have enough xtra plastic to sand the
scratch out, not so with most cdrs - they are just
completely ruined).
Another thing is that what is wrong with a little
filter in place, a little monetary obstacle involved
in printing up some cds? If it cost me a hundred to
throw fifty together or just under a thousand to make
500, which do you think I am going to make sure are
the absolute best quality music i can come up with?
Too much of what I hear on CDRs is "here, this is what
I did last week, I'll have another one in a couple of
weeks." I'd rather you wait, hone your skills and blow
my over with that final collection you staked your
months wages on.
