[microsound] ableton live
it seems to me to be a great mistake of elitism to dismiss live as
merely being an interactive art piece from Monolake that allows others
to sound exactly like them.
it's an intuitive, highly efficient piece of software that makes
improvising with pre-recorded audio exceptionally easy. I haven't taken
the plunge into Live 4 yet, but what fiddling I've done with the midi
tools in the demo suggest that they've also managed to do the same for
midi controlled virtual instruments.
This has freed up thousands of creative people from having to struggle
with these mundane questions of how to perform computer music in a live
setting, and instead focus on creating more personal things, whether it
is new instruments in reaktor or max/msp patches, or simply working on
melodies and compositions, etc.
Now, it's not perfect, but it's flexible enough that it's intensely
useful for all sorts of computer music, from gabber to jungle to
microsound.
