Re: [microsound] outsider artists
i know hasil adkins has been lumped into that category a few times.
outsider art seems to be a term invented by third parties to classify
art for commodification.
henry darger, one of the recently well-covered "outsider artists" did
not create his work for the benefit (aesthetically, financially) of
others as far as i know. his body of work was discovered after his
death, then parcelled out to museums, collectors, etc.
i cant imagine too many people calling themselves outsider artists
since even the more reclusive folks venture out to have people
see/hear/feel their art. look at jandek. he may operate on the
periphery but he certainly puts out records and recently made his
first live appearance. perhaps if he were a true outsider artist the
music would not have made it to a recorded form or for the public to
hear.
