I believe the Canadians are just as strict, if not more, than the
americans when it comes to musicians performing and "stealing jobs."
I don't know if it's still in effect, but it used to be that if a
canadian club hired an american band, they also had to pay a canadian
band for the gig (and the canadian band could just stay home). This
may have jut been a union rule, and not a law, but when my uncle's
dixieland band would play gigs in canada, they knew that a canadian
band was getting payed to sit at home.
