Distortion was probably "invented" countless times by many independent 
engineers long before its appearance in popular culture. Imagine some 
lab technician putting in their 9-5, firing up audio circuit x for the 
first time, component y's being value miscalculated. "What a godawful 
racket" or similar must have been said over and over again.
