Indeed an interesting and useful article. Slightly related to
Electroplankton: I did a little Pd patch for my presentation at
http://makeart.goto10.org which was inspired by "Luminaria". I never
played EP myself, I just saw some videos. 

My patch, called "gridwalker", doesn't have the limitations the
article complained about, namely locked rhythm, defined key, and set
patterns. However it only allows to change the whole grid, not single
elements, as it's not designed for a touchpad.

It's available at http://devel.goto10.org/ where you need to navigate
to /pd-patches/fbar/doc/makeart/2006/gridwalker/ and you also need the
stuff in /pd-patches/fbar/list-abs/

This patch - as Luminaria - is very simple and uses well-known
techniques (state machines, cellular automata, "Game of Life"), so I
don't feel ashamed because I'd rip Iwai off: I don't. ;)
