Re: [microsound] studio monitors
ok. what makes the tannoys superior ; not the reveals , i'm referring
to the top of the line studio monitors , is that they feature
concentric /axis coherent drivers. what this means is that all the
frequencies are in phase and there is little blurring of the stereo
image.
tannoy has a patent on the dual concentric speaker , where there is one
voice coil mounted inside another. for a long while , and perhaps still
; they are the standard to which other speakers are compared. other
manufacturers have tried different methods ; some ingenious and some
not so ingenious , to produce a phase coherent sound . these methods
include physical axis compensation and electronic compensation by
applying different delays to the midrange speakers and the tweeters.
you might also see a tweeter mounted in front of the larger speaker.
phase coherence is often a crucial factor in monitoring microsoundish
work, especially if you're composing with sinewaves , say or very
precise tones where the way they interact is the music. also , if
you're planning on multi channel or surround sound mixes it's a good
idea to know what you're dealing with before making speaker choices or
just enjoying it on a home system .
hope this is help
