i use live 5 for my live performances. it's the number one choice
for me and has been indispensable: it's sample playing ease,
efficient cpu use, simple and powerful vst and au plugin hosting
and flexible routing options leave most of the other (mac-based)
hosts i've used in the dust. a great program. my only quibble with
live is the way it works with sample loops: there is no easy way of
taking a sample, be it a short loop or a long file, and simply loop
it - live wants to process the loop, beat match it so that it can be
used
rhythmically with other samples, plugins, etc. this processing (called
"warp" in live parlance) affects the tone, texture and speed of the
loop;
so if you have a sound file that needs to preserve these characteristics
you need to go into a convoluted process within live called "follow
actions"
which does allow you to play a file and loop it without warping.
however,
you must edit the file so that it falls on an even beat/measure -
that is the
parameter that you need to know using follow actions. once you get into
the workflow, however, it becomes second nature. i use peak for
editing my samples, which i can invoke directly within live, another
great feature.
