Re: [microsound] Reverse Engineering Max/MSP Autechre (reaktor too)
Wow, i am going to ask another question, hopefully it does not set off
another tidal wave of debate like my myspace question did, although
there was some interesting topics discussed. People tend to get over
defensive and for the most part communication seems to break down, not
fun when that happens...
What is the point of emulating an autechre patch? Is it to sound like
them? Or learn from the process? I would think that with the
incredible amount of communities/resources on the internet that one can
educate themselves about Max/MSP/ PD/ Reaktor and create their own
process along the way. Am i missing something here? Is it the
challenge of being ABLE to reverse engineer a screenshot of an autechre
patch, much like the challenge a hacker faces when he sets his site on
a security system? Can i do this? To me its like learning how to
paint by studying the masters, which is great, but the point is not to
be able to paint in their style but to reach a level of excellence on
par with them. Avoiding the Copy machine mentality.
Not disparaging anyone, or their efforts. Genuine curiousity...

I found the Reaktor patches from Recordlabelrecords a bit too
needlessly complex - they don't sound amazing either.
Rachmiel and John Nowak have released better Reaktor instruments IMHO
