As a slight tangent, some of you might be interested in _Sight of Sound_ by Richard Leppert:

It's an academic book focusing on how music and performance were depicted in European paintings and drawings from the 1600s to 1900. An interesting book that goes into some of the same issues we've been talking about over the past couple weeks, as well as dealing with the problem of non-aural sound representation.
