[microsound] powerbook/macbook pro audio input

Hi all,

I have tried a couple of times to record using a plug-in dynamic mic,
with the microphone-in jack on my Powerbook G4.  Has anyone had
success using the mic in, or are they all as useless as mine?  I get
a shitty low level and so much hiss that the recording is a
completely pointless exercise in proving what a crap sound card is
built-in.  Or is mine just broken?
