Easy. You accumulate synths and drum machines with loads of presets.
Try them out. Find ones you like. Make a record.
This, combined with clever sampling (another form of preset?) has made
Timbaland and the Neptunes very rich men.

First off, I can't stand the cult of authenticity. I value
construction over authenticity in art.
Second, it would be a lot of fun to compose using presets only. I keep
contemplating how such a project might work.
