Re: [microsound] Re: stockhausen RIP: NYTimes article

Because the news/journalism/media outlets seem to be more about ratings and sensationalism then being truly informative. I think it was a way for them to spice up what they otherwise thought to be a dull article that catered to a niche demographic. Its sad but its a knee jerk reaction to the short attention span of most people. It seemed to be put into the article as a mere after thought. I think its a common trend with most any type of news you watch/hear. I still like NPR, for the most part i think they are fairly objective. Im sure there are things about NPR that i am unaware of as well. Where does one go for subjective news now days? Its rather scary if you think about it.

My problem with the NY Times obit was that it put his now infamous quote about 9/11 at the beginning of the article and the rest of it seemed to all be colored by that. I can't believe someone who literally wrote the book on modern music (Paul Griffiths) would put so much emphasis on that quote when he knows that Stockhausen was truly one of the artistic giants of the 20th century. It shows how warped the US has become, even the supposedly liberal NY Times. I wonder if he was told to do it that way or if he really believes Stockhausen was some kind of terrorist supporter. Either way, it's pathetic to see that our politics is so warped that artistic brilliance is made less important because of one controversial statement. A statement, btw, that has a lot of truth to it if one can get away from the massively ignorant,
fundamentalist, literal way of thinking that dominates our culture. I
wonder if obits from other cities put so much emphasis on said quote. I
hope not.

I knew Stockhausen for over 20 years, and worked in the Stockhausen Verlag for 3 years. He could be the nicest guy - put me up for a month while I looked for and apartment - also the biggest jerk. He wrote a lot of great
music, and some not so great. I'm glad to have known him.

You can attach whatever you want to some one else's comments but in
the end your assumption is what is truly irrelevant because it is just
that, an assumtpion.

I honestly meant no disrespect, but if fanboys cannot separate their
emotions from hard cold facts then a meaningful conversation is a
moot point.

Good Lord.

Sorry if I failed to understand your "inside joke" on the list.

And the "devine" analogy was perfectly clear Aleks. <sigh> My point
was that it had nothing to do with the iPhone.

Come down off of your pedestal my friend. People will take you or I or
anyone else on this list as seriously as they wish. Quite frankly,
your use of profanity on the list has always bothered me, but I keep
my mouth shut because you are who you are. Whatever.

And - for the sake of argument about something that actually relates
to music... for me, *because* he was brilliant is precisely why I
couldn't care less about his "shortcomings." Indeed, we all have
those don't we?

You have a great weekend as well! I for one am thankful to have some
rain *finally* out here in the dry desert :-)

It means that just because he was brilliant does not mean we should
ignore some of his short comings.

The simple fact that you don't understand the "devine" analogy
explains a lot to me.

The iphone sig is an inside joke between me and a fellow list member.

When you act in this way do you really feel better about yourself?
Do
you think that people will take you seriously in the future.

Have a great weekend! Chill out a tad and relax. Life is too short

You certainly don't need to be a "fanboy" to realize Stockhausen's stature in contemporary music culture. Like it or not he was a giant, and that is
the "hard cold fact".
I just wish that in the hour of the man's passing we would be talking about his work and contribution, not about what he might have said once, or if he
was a nice
guy with a bad temper. That's just gossip as far as I'm concerned..

I've used profanity once on this list, and that was because my
personal inbox was getting flooded with people who were angry with
what they felt was my lack of appreciation with how expensive eye wear
is.

You go out of your way to be a jerk then justify it by irrelevant
motivators.

" oh you once swore which absolutely excuses any idiotic behaviour
that I am going to display"

you ignore the fact that your first comment in this thread was a slam
on me. Which had nothing to do with the subject being discussed. you
make no sense what so ever.

Are people allowed to express their opinions on this list without
inciting some sort of mob mentality response?

Good obit in the NYTimes but, perhaps it's just me, why oh why do
they feel the need to translate all the tiles of the works mentioned:
"Song of the Youths", "Groups", "Contacts", etc. (and Messiaen's
"Mode of Values and Intensities")? It's the first time I noticed
this. Do they always do this? I know the British and Irish are pretty
poor in foreign languages but even the Guardian used the "correct"
titles.

hi microsounders,
i haven't posted on here in years, and i'm afraid my question won't be
terribly microsoundish; apologies in advance.

to those who were talking about COG, that's potentially music to my ears. i've had to move all my music to an external hard drive, as my laptop filled up ages ago (professional hazard, i suppose), and itunes does a really terrible job with finding music that's stored on externals. half the time it tells me the song in question can't be found, even when i haven't moved anything or changed any folder names. does anyone who's used COG know if it handles that better than itunes? in itunes it seems to be a problem of itunes' complicated
folder structures, but i'm not 100% sure.

offlist is fine.
thanks,
philip

Hello list friends,

Below is an event that features live electronic music performances in
Williamsburg (Brooklyn, NY), this coming Wednesday, December 12, 2007.
While largely revolving around Ableton Live, many will bring analog
gear and other twiddly-thingers (even drum kits, bass, and guitar!).

I will be performing material from my album, Early Collected Works,
unreleased material for 2008, Detroit classics, and modern cuts and
edits.

All present in the New York region should consider checking this out,
as there's a lot of different artists exploring a lot of different
paths in electronic music and utilizing some very diverse
technologies.

Cheers!
