Re: [microsound] Last.fm sound quality?
Hi Sietse,
Thanks for your reply!

That would be really nice. Although I just tried it: I uploaded a 192
Kbps VPB MP3...
They do not recompress the files at all. You upload the files and a
few seconds later they are online.
- the last.fm GUI told me that it had to "import" my file and that it
was going to take two minutes
So if you make the mp3's yourself you have got full-control of the
whole deal. Just check what you upload before.
- the soundfile that appeared later ended up sounding really similar
(full of artifacts) to the previous one that I had already uploaded
as a WAV and that they compressed
Please let me know if you have any other suggestions on how to
improve the quality of the uploads. FWIW, I haven't been able to find
_official_ information on the bit rate that they are using, but I've
found this:
Wired | All Major Labels to Stream Free Music on Last.fm (January 23,
2008)
"Stiksel then conducted an overview of the Last.fm site, which looks
much like it did before Wednesday's announcement, but with far more
licensed music from high-profile artists. He said that not only does
the site provide single-song, on-demand streaming (128 Kbps stereo
MP3), but also complete album streams three times on a "try before
you buy" basis."

Last.fm | Wikipedia (January 30, 2008)
"The radio stream uses an MP3 stream encoded at 128 kbit/s 44.1 kHz"

last.fm | Forums > Feedback and Ideas > Compressed Music (January
26-27, 2008)
"And, for the record, there have been people complaining about 128
kbps being too much for their connections to handle, so yeah... "

I guess it sort of makes sense.
Groeten!,
